This course is the first trimester of a two-trimester course. Topics include nature of matter, electronic structure, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, chemical bonding, molecular structures, and properties of solutions and gases. Three hours of lecture and 1 hour of recitation each week. This course satisfies the requirement for a major or minor in chemistry.
Prerequisites: College algebra (MATH 120) or one year of high school chemistry with a minimum grade of C or permission of the department chair.
