General Information

ATM

Automated teller machines are located in the Campus Center Building, Florida Hospital Orlando (outside the cafeteria—next to the escalator), and at the Florida Hospital Credit Union.

Babysitting

Babysitting in student housing is not permitted. Visiting children under 10 years of age should not be left unattended and are not allowed overnight privileges in the apartments.

Bulletin Boards

The student housing office main bulletin board provides pertinent information about resident life. Each apartment complex has a designated bulletin board, managed by the RA. Personal items may not be placed on any bulletin board without authorization from the Dean.

Churches

A listing of Orlando area churches is available at the student housing office. We invite you to visit these churches and find one that meets your needs. You are always welcome to worship at the Florida Hospital Seventh-day Adventist Church, located two blocks west of the College. Counseling

A variety of free counseling services are offered to all students. A Mental Health Counselor and Chaplain are available through the Department of Student Services. Students may make an appointment through the executive secretary at (407) 303-8016. Students employed by Florida Hospital or FHCHS may also utilize services provided through the Hospital Employee Assistance Program. Appointments may be made by calling (407) 303-3690.

Copy Machines

Copy services are available in the Robert A. Williams Library and the Learning Resource Center. Students are not allowed to make copies at the student housing office.

Devotional Life

All residents are encouraged to participate in worship services available in the student housing office, as well as maintain their own devotional life through daily Bible study and prayer.

Discipline

The Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences College Discipline Committee administers student discipline. Discipline may include, but is not limited to, warnings, confiscation of items, fines, suspension, and/or dismissal.

Dress and Deportment

In keeping with its mission to educate healthcare professionals in a Christian environment, Florida Hospital College requests that students dress modestly and conduct themselves in a professional manner. Footwear must be worn at all times. Pajamas are not allowed in the classroom. The areas of your body covered by a modest swimsuit are to be clothed at all times. Students enrolled in clinicals will be given guidelines from their departments for appropriate dress and deportment for the various clinical facilities.

E-mail

Residents are required to maintain an active e-mail account since the Dean frequently uses e-mail for communication. Students are urged to check their e-mail and mailboxes every 24 hours as they are held accountable for any information sent via e-mail or to their mailbox. In case of a change in e-mail address, complete the E-mail Update Form available at the student housing office.

Food Service

Food can be purchased in a variety of locations.

  • The Florida Hospital Cafeteria, located on the first floor of Florida Hospital, Orlando. FHCHS students receive a 30% discount when showing their ID card. Hours are 6:00 a.m. — 2:00 a.m. daily.
  • The Campus Bookstore and Café carries a variety of sandwiches, salads, drinks, and snack items. Hours are Monday — Thursday, 7:30 a.m. — 6:30 p.m. and Friday, 7:30 a.m. — 3:00 p.m.
  • The Grain Chain, located on the corner of King Street and Azeez Garden Road (across from the security station), carries a variety of baked goods, sandwiches, and beverages. Hours are Monday — Thursday, 6:00 a.m. — 6:00 p.m. and Friday, 6:00 a.m. — 5:00 p.m.

Guests

Overnight guests staying in your room must be registered at the student housing office and are expected to comply with all policies and regulations. Guest visitation is limited to three concurrent days. Guests are discouraged from visiting during weeknights. Overnight guests of the opposite sex and children under the age of ten are not allowed. Students’ failure to register a guest will result in a $100.00 fine. The College assumes no liability for injury or accident of overnight guests.

Illness

It is the student’s responsibility to notify instructors and/or employers if unable to attend classes or work. For medical assistance, you may contact the Family Health Center at Florida Hospital, (407) 303-1967; Centra Care on Lee Road, (407) 629-9281; or the Emergency Room at Florida Hospital.

  • Threat to Life — In the event that threat to life behavior becomes apparent, the Dean will notify the administrator on call. If necessary, a mental health professional will evaluate and decide on appropriate intervention, which may include hospitalization. Should this occur, re-admission to student housing will be permitted after the College receives documentation of completed treatment and the appropriate releases have been signed.
  • Communicable Disease — Please refer to the Communicable Disease Policy located in the FHCHS Student Handbook.

Insubordination

Failure to follow verbal or written instructions or requests made by the Dean or a Resident Assistant may result in disciplinary action.

Internet Access

Internet access is not provided by FHCHS in student housing.

Keys

Room keys and mailbox keys are issued upon check-in. Replacement keys are $100.00 each.

Lobby Areas

A furnished lobby is located in the student housing office for recreation purposes. All residents and visitors are asked to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner. Inappropriate public displays of affection, including sitting or reclining on one another, is not permitted. No lying down or sleeping is allowed in the lobby. The TV remote, VHS, DVD, and board games may be checked out at the student housing office with your FHCHS student ID Card. PG-13, PG, and G-rated movies are allowed for general lobby viewing. Lobby furniture, including the TV remote, should not be removed.

Lost and Found

Items found in student housing areas will be held at the student housing office for one week, and then taken to Student Services.

Newspaper

A daily newspaper is available in the lobby.

Personal Property

The security of personal property is the students’ responsibility. FHCHS is not responsible for loss, theft, and fire or water damage to any personal property. In the students best interest, we suggest that parent’s homeowners insurance policy be updated to cover personal items in transit and while living in student housing. Taking the following precautions is helpful:

  • List all personal property including manufacturer information and identifying serial numbers.
  • Record the names, addresses, and account numbers of all credit cards and checking accounts.
  • Notify these accounts immediately if cards are lost or stolen.
  • Store money and valuables in a secure place. Students should not keep excess amounts of cash in their rooms.
  • Leave family heirlooms or other valuable items at home.

Pest Control

Apartments are treated on an as-needed basis for pest control. If a pest problem occurs, please fill out a Work Order Slip at the student housing office and your apartment will be retreated. Help keep pests under control by storing all food in sealed containers, maintaining a clean apartment, and emptying all trash containers.

Postage Stamps

Postage stamps can be purchased in the Campus Bookstore and Café and from vending machines located next to the mailroom at Florida Hospital, Orlando.

Recreational Activities

A variety of recreational activities are available for students. Canoes and canoeing equipment are available at the Student Services Center. When canoeing, life vests must be worn at all times.

Sabbath Observance

In keeping with the Seventh-day Adventist belief of worship on Saturday, Florida Hospital College gives special emphasis to Sabbath hours (sundown Friday evening to sundown Saturday evening). The campus offices are closed from 3:00 p.m. Friday until 8:00 a.m. on Monday.

Shuttle Service

A free shuttle service is available Monday — Thursday from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and on Friday from 6:15 a.m. until 15 minutes after the last Friday class. Information about designated pick-up locations is available at the Student Services Department or by calling (407) 303-5600, ext. 3025.

Stealing

Taking items you do not own will be regarded as theft. Individuals engaging in theft will be subject to immediate discipline or dismissal. Students should take precautions to protect themselves and their personal belongings by locking doors at all times.

Student Privacy

For your protection, no personal information will be released unless authorized by the Disclosure Agreement. Each student is responsible to give anticipated guests their telephone number and occupancy information.

Telephones

Students supply their own telephone and answering machine. FHCHS does not provide telephone service.

Television/VCR

There is a TV/VCR/DVD player in the student housing lobby for student use. A student ID card or driver’s license is required to check out the TV remote. While viewing the TV, be considerate of others by keeping the volume bar below 19. TV viewing in the lobby is not allowed from Friday night sunset to Saturday night sunset.

Vandalism

Damage done to any personal or campus property will result in fines, restitution payment, and possible criminal prosecution.

Worship Programs

In addition to several worship programs held on Campus, a Monday night chapel is held in student housing and the SonSet Café, sponsored by the Campus Ministries Department, meets on Friday nights. Students are encouraged to attend worship opportunities to renew their relationship with God and with each other. Additional worship opportunities are regularly advertised on the student housing office’s main bulletin board.
