Office for Students with Disabilites

The faculty and staff of Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences are dedicated to an equitable and exemplary education for all of its students. They believe that equal education is not limited to a physically accessible campus for its students. It also strives to provide necessary accommodations to those students with disabilities.

After graduation from high school or reaching the age of 21, students with disabilities may still be eligible for services as mandated by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. Under such legislation, individuals with disabilities are guaranteed certain rights of equal access to programs and services. Eligibility is based on the existence of an identified impairment that substantially limits a major life activity. Not every impairment qualifies as a disability protected by the ADA because not every impairment is substantially limiting. The court in E.E.O.C. v. Harvey L. Walner & Associates, 91 F.3d 963,996 (7th Cir. 1996), described the proper disability determination as follows:

A disability determination, however, should not be based on abstract lists as categories of impairments, as there are varying degrees of impairments as well as varied individuals who suffer from the impairments. In fact, the regulations note that a finding of disability is not necessarily based on the name or diagnosis of the impairment the person has, but rather, on the effect of that impairment on the life of the individual. Some impairments may be disabling for particular individuals but not for others, depending upon the stage of the disease or disorder, the presence of other impairments that combine to make the impairment disabling, or any number of other factors.

This is why a determination of disability must be made on a case-by-case basis. Documentation of a disability must verify the disability in accordance using current professional standards and techniques, and it must clearly substantiate the need for all of the student's specific accommodation requests. We want all students to be successful and we understand that an important component of success is matching your needs to the services we provide. Due to the innumerable impairments that exist we are not able to display an exhaustive list, however, some areas of disabilities considered for accommodation include:

  • Hearing (Hard of Hearing or Deafness)
  • Learning Disabilities (Dyscalculia, Dysphasia, Dyslexia)
  • Medical (Diabetes, Acquired Brain Injury, Sickle Cell Anemia)
  • Mental Health (Depression, Anxiety Disorders, Asperger’s Disorder)
  • Neurological (ADD/ADHD, Epilepsy, Autism)
  • Physical (Spinal Cord Injury, Cerebral Palsy, Carpel Tunnel Syndrome)
  • Visual (Low vision or Blindness)

The Office for Students with Disibilities is located in Student Success on the Second floor of the Campus Center.
